2009 International Games in Varadero, Cuba
(January 03 - 10, 2009) - In January of 2009, the Canadian National Martial Arts Team traveled to the 4.5/5-star Barcelo Marina Palace in Varadero, Cuba. The team travelled from January 3rd-10th to compete in the International Congress of Martial Arts, International Games. The Games drew in many talented athletes who had a high drive to represent their countries. During the tournament, anticipation was high for the Canadian athletes to do well and represent their country against their opponents. However, the experience that Team Canada shared with their fellow competitors was unforgettable. Highlights included the donations of equipment, uniforms, souvenirs, and toiletries from Team Canada to Team Cuba, as well as a very special seminar taught by several talented black belts from Cuba to the Canadian martial artists. The results included the MVP of the Games, Owen Atkins and 2 Black Belt Triple Crown winners, Julian Shamuon and Paul Lebrun.
