2011 International Games in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

(January 01 - 08, 2011) - Costa Rica event will be taking place from January 1st- 9th, 2011. This will be taking place at the Riu Guanacaste, a 5 star all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste. It is located just 30 minutes from the Liberia airport. The competition will have competitors ranging from the ages of 4-50 years of age and all ranks will be present. Divisions include forms, weapons, sparring, open musical forms and weapons, synchronized as well as chanbara. The International Games will be a high energy event with many talented martial artists competing.

Medal Count & Results

On Saturday January 1st, 2011, the Canadian National Martial Arts Team travelled to Costa Rica to compete in the 3rd annual International Games hosted by the International Congress of Martial Arts. The competition required the team to compete Saturday evening after a long day of travelling. The Team did a fantastic job, competing in divisions such as extreme martial arts, chanbara, and synchronized. Following competition days included divisions such as traditional forms, traditional weapons and sparring. Team Canada had competitors ranging from the ages of 5 to 50, each competitor held ranks between white to black belt. Final results from the competition included 70 Gold, 62 Silver, 54 Bronze. It also included 2 MVP's, Ryan Murphy of Shamuon Generation of Martial Arts (Waterloo) and Freddy Trigiani of East West Karate (Mississauga). Highest honours from the competition go to the 3 Triple Crown Black belts (a triple crown is when a single competitor wins 3 gold medals in various divisions) which went to Julian Shamuon, 19, of Shamuon Generation of Martial Arts (Waterloo), Elyse Molnar, 19, of East West Karate (Mississauga), and Silvana Shamuon of Shamuon Generation of Martial Arts (Waterloo). The team will be getting together to celebrate the accomplishments and start on their next journey to the 2012 International Games in February.
